SOCCER NEWS - Southern Academy FC suffered a 2-1 defeat against a spirited Inkonjane FC in a gripping Geolfa Super League clash at Lawaaikamp Stadium in George on Saturday 23 August.
Despite their loss, the Thembalethu-based Academy boys remain atop the league table with 55 points from 24 matches, boasting 17 wins, four draws and three losses.
Inkonjane, hot on their heels, secured 54 points to claim second place.
The match ignited with Southern Academy's precise build-up play from the back. Yibanathi Stuurman struck first, giving the Academy a 1-0 lead with a moment of brilliance from midfield. Inkonjane responded swiftly, using quick touches and wing speed to breach the Academy defence.
Nande Zwalipheli equalised for the Birds, making it 1-1 by half-time.
The second half saw both sides chasing a decisive goal.
Zwalipheli, a constant threat, created multiple chances before netting his second, beating Academy goalkeeper Khanyisile Thinta to secure a 2-1 lead for Inkonjane.
Despite the Academy's right-wing back delivering a stellar performance and creating flank opportunities, no further goals materialised.
The 2-1 victory slowed the pace-setters' momentum, but didn't dim their promotion hopes.
Southern Academy remains focused on climbing to the next tier, while Inkonjane's high-flying form signals fierce competition ahead in the Geolfa Super League.
