SOCCER NEWS - The George Local Football Association (Geolfa) will again host its annual Easter soccer tournament, a prestigious challenge on its calendar.
This tournament is a platform for the upcoming young stars to showcase their talent in front of their support base.
It kicks off on Thursday afternoon, 17 April, and the final will be staged on Easter Monday. The competition will be played at various stadiums in George - Thembalethu, Lawaaikamp and Maraiskamp (Parkdene).
The 32 clubs that will be taking part are Simunye, Black Cats 2, Inkonjane, Royal Blues, Vista, George Vultures, Young Killers, Outeniqua Chiefs, All Stars, United Spurs, Vuvuzela United, Young Masters, Raul Stars, Abahlali, Heaven Stars, Silver Stars, Fast Eleven, African Eagles, Silver Stars, Thembalethu Brothers, Paris United, Rovers, Southern Academy, Young Blues, Burning Fire, Madibaz, Tigers, Western Tigers, Black Cats 1, Future Stars, George United and Pacaltsdorp.
Great excitement
Geolfa secretary Xola Makinana said they are very excited about the tournament, which promises some great football. The draw was finalised last weekend. The competing 32 teams will be divided into eight groups with four clubs per group.
The event will start off with the launch of the new logo on 17 April, followed by the opening matches. Geolfa will be joined by the mayor, some Safa Eden executives, former Geolfa officials and other distinguished guests to mark this special occasion.
Makinana said they are looking forward to witness top-tier football as they aim to elevate the standard of play in the region.
Commitment to support
Makinana said every participant will receive two match balls to underscore Geolfa's commitment to support its teams both on and off the field.
Geolfa believes the event will not only be a great competition, but also a corridor for players' development - fostering camaraderie and raising the level of football in the region.
He emphasised they are eager to collaborate closely with teams and management to ensure the smooth running and overall success of the festival.
He also expressed the Geolfa management's gratitude to George Municipality and one of the local stakeholders, Mzoxolo Pasiya.
Prizing structure
• First: R25 000 with big trophy and 30 gold medals
• Second: R13 000 and silver medals
• Third and fourth: R5 000
• From 5th to 8th: R1 500
• Two match balls for every participant.
