SOCCER NEWS - The George Local Football Association’s lower division played their last fixtures over the weekend - with the top two teams, Inkonjane FC and Southern Academy FC, being promoted to the Geolfa Promotional League for the 2025/26 season.
The Thembalethu side, Southern Academy, defeated the George Celtics from Rosemoor 2-1 in their last fixture of the season at the Lawaaikamp Stadium on 2 November.
Yibanathi Stuurman scored a brace for his team and Shakeal Makapan netted the only goal for the Rosemoor-based side.
Theo Mdyubhe of Southern Academy gave an impressive performance in the centre of the field.
Southern Academy gained promotion as the runner-up in the league, while the George Celtics ended the season in the top five.
A fast-paced first half saw Stuurman scoring twice for Southern Academy in the first 20 minutes. The Celtics relied heavily on the speed of Makapan and Ferbian Buys to penetrate through the Southern Academy backline, but scored no goals.
In the second half, both teams employed attacking football on the wings. The Celtics went straight into the box and were rewarded a set piece, which was turned into a goal by Makapan.
No more goals were scored, and Southern Academy went home with the bragging rights after winning 2-1.
