GEORGE NEWS - Football fans in Zone 9 were treated to a day of soccer action and star power during the Zone 9 Soccer Cruyff Annual Festival finals yesterday, 12 October.
Former Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (54) joined the celebrations, keeping the spirit of the festival alive as he mingled with players and supporters during the launch of the new soccer court in Thembalethu.
The Dutch legend was impressed by the raw talent on display in the mini-tournament and took time to encourage the young players to keep chasing their dreams.
“Stay positive in your dreams,” Van der Sar said. “Dreams need support from parents, coaches, teachers, and friends - that’s how they become reality.”
He recalled how he began his career playing on poor fields, but through hard work and commitment, he rose to become one of Europe’s greatest goalkeepers.
Van der Sar’s career includes major accolades such as Best European Goalkeeper (1995, 2009), UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year (2009), and the Premier League Golden Glove (2008/09 season).
