SOCCER NEWS - Thanks to the vision of two men who have the interests of the Thembalethu community and their development through sport at heart, the sports field in Ward 15, Zone 9, is set for a major upgrade.
The upgrade includes the new Cruyff Court, a five-a-side soccer court for junior development, and a revamped main field with a grandstand provided by George Municipality.
This vision of Ward 15's Cllr Bonisile Hani and Granville Campher of George Municipality is being realised through the investment of Empower, a local non-profit, partnered with the Netherlands-based Cruyff Foundation, the Johannesburg NPO Riza and the George Municipality.
Empower's director, David May, and Campher visited the site on Thursday 21 August.
May emphasised Empower's mission to 'empower the champions', an initiative that supports community leaders such as Campher and Hani in amplifying their impact.
Hani and his team expressed their excitement over these transformative changes.
The Cruyff Court's aim is to foster youth development, encouraging a love of soccer while providing a safe and fun space.
May thanked Riza and the Cruyff Foundation for turning this vision into reality. He said he looked forward to celebrating the court's completion together with the George community, and hoped it will create a lasting legacy for future generations.
