SOCCER NEWS - Nelson Mandela University’s Madibaz FC learned a hard lesson in the Geolfa Heritage Soccer Tournament quarter-final, suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Black Cats FC at Lawaaikamp Stadium on a chilly Saturday afternoon, 26 September.
Black Cats wasted little time asserting their authority, with Lihle Toto opening the scoring to put the students under early pressure.
Henristot Kawaya then doubled the advantage with a powerful free kick from just outside the box.
Madibaz were handed a lifeline when they won a penalty, which Yibanathi Khoza converted to make it 2-1.
However, Kawaya restored Black Cats’ two-goal cushion before half-time, scoring his second with another well-executed set-piece effort that found its way through the Madibaz defence.
The students showed greater urgency after the break, with Luyolo Mlungwana and Kwandokuhle Mazibuko influential in midfield, supported by Thulani Masondo. Black Cats, however, remained dangerous going forward.
Mphumzi Kalolo added a fourth goal to further strengthen Black Cats’ grip on the match before Xolani Mandla put the result beyond doubt with the fifth.
Madibaz fought to stay in the contest, but Black Cats’ attacking threat proved too much to handle.
The 5-1 victory sent Black Cats FC into the semi-finals, keeping their hopes of Heritage Cup glory firmly alive.
