SOCCER NEWS - The Black Cats FC ladies’ team ended a challenging season in the Safa Eden Regional Women’s League on a high note by clinching the DCAS Soccer Festival trophy.
In the tournament’s final, held at Bongolethu Stadium in Oudtshoorn, the Black Cats defeated Rising the Bar Ladies 2-0.
Star forward Sanelisiwe ‘Messi’ Yengwa scored both goals to secure the victory.
Earlier in the competition, the Cats had opened with a 2-0 win over FC Milan Ladies before earning a goalless draw against Knysna’s Southern Stars Ladies.
Owing to the difficulties of the festive season - many players being away on holiday in other provinces - the Black Cats travelled with just 11 players and no substitutes.
Coach Whayan Windwaai praised his squad’s commitment, energy and team spirit, noting how they fought together as a unit throughout the event.
“It was not a good season for us, but we managed to bring home some silverware,” he said. He hopes the triumph will motivate the team heading into the new regional women’s league campaign.
A Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport representative, Mandilakhe Matika, emphasised the tournament’s goal: raising awareness in the Garden Route District that soccer is a viable sporting option for women interested in the game.
