FOOTBALL NEWS - The Lawaaikamp giants "Ikati emnyama" Black Cats collected much-needed points in the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League in a home game played at Rosemoor Stadium on Sunday afternoon, 18 December.
The visiting team from Overberg region, Gansbaai City, failed to defend against the speed of the Black Cats flanks and lost 2-0 to Black Cats. The goals were netted by Lunga "Anelka" Jantjies and Melisizwe Mbomvana.
Of the five league games so far, Black Cats have won two and lost three, while Gansbaai City had only one victory and were defeated in four games.
Black Cats launched an attack from the start, penetrating Gansbaai City's defence, but their shot at the goal went wide. The former Eastern City FC left back Ryan "Nyathi" Gcuwa (Black Cats) sent a powerful shot inside the box from the left side of the field, but it was well defended by Gansbaai City.
Ten minutes into the game Black Cats were awarded with a set piece. Unfortunately their strike went straight at a Gansbaai City defender and it was cleared away. Both teams were fighting from the centre of the field with Black Cats leaning heavily on their wings Shane-Lee Windvogel and Amimu Hussein. Lunga "Anelka" Jantjies (Black Cats) delivered a powerful shot inside the box, but it hit the right right post.
Gansbaai City fell back on the strength of Tengile "Scara" Mawonga to control the game. They won a corner kick on the right side of the field, but Black Cats defenders did very well blocking Gansbaai City's shot at the goal. At the end of an exciting first half there was no score.
In the second half the visitors started out deploying their center mid Mawonga "Scara" Tengile to distribute the ball. Black Cats received a free kick on the left side of the field, which did not end in a goal. Gansbaai City failed to score their first goal after a beautiful cross played in from the right side of the field.
Black Cats made good use of a delightful pass from the left side of the field and Lunga Jantjies beat Gansbaai City goalkeeper Ngcuse Lonwabo to net Cats' first goal. Gansbaai City tried to come back into the game but failed to equalise.
With sustained offensive play that kept Gansbaai's defenders on the back foot, Black Cats scored their second goal when Melisizwe Mbomvana capitalised on a marvellous cross played in from the left side of the field. The visiting side were throwing every ball in front during the last minutes of the game trying to create opportunities to score. Tengile "Scara" Mawonga (Gansbaai City) sent a powerful long-range strike, but missed the target.
Black Cats' Lunga Jantjies received the last chance of the game but his strike went wide. Cats had done enough to clinch their victory with a score of 2-0.
Last weekend's Western Cape ABC Motsepe League fixtures were the last ones before the Christmas break. The League will resume early in January 2022.
The George Herald sport desk wishes everyone only the best for the festive season, a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year.
