Band Slam brings George schools together through music

SCHOOL NEWS - The sound of jazz filled Hoërskool Outeniqua's school hall on Friday evening, 9 October, when talented young musicians from four George schools joined forces for an evening of live music.

Band Slam 2026 brought together learners from York High School, Hoërskool Outeniqua, George High School and Pacaltsdorp Secondary School to celebrate local musical talent.

Learners from Pacaltsdorp Secondary joined George High's band for a performance in which they showcased their musical abilities together with the two other school bands of York High and Hoërskool Outeniqua.

Each of the three bands performed their own set, much to the delight of the audience.

The evening ended on a high note with a special performance by the teachers' band, featuring Lynette Petersen, Germaine Leonard, Renaldo Hendriks and Elrine Lottino.

According to Petersen, the Band Slam is just the beginning of what the organisers hope will become a much bigger celebration of jazz in George. Plans are under way to develop the event into a multi-day jazz festival in the coming years, with professional musicians invited to present workshops and share their expertise with young performers.
