GEORGE NEWS - While between covering two stories, Marguerite van Ginkel, journalist from the George Herald, stopped at Rocket Café in George for a quick almond croissant and take-away coffee. That’s when she noticed a group of very tall men in cycling gear, speaking with unmistakable Swiss accents, followed by a photographer wielding a serious-looking camera. Naturally, her curiosity and a touch of amusement got the better of her, and she just had to ask what was going on.
It turns out this is close-knit group of friends from Switzerland, led by former politician and cycling enthusiast Ruedi Noser, recently kicked off an extraordinary two-week cycling journey through the Western Cape.
The tour celebrates friendship, endurance and the joy of exploring South Africa's open roads.

This 15-night adventure along the iconic Route 62 is more than a cycling challenge, it is a shared experience of discovery. From the lush coast of George to the vineyards of Stellenbosch, the group is covering over 900km and 6 000m of climbing, supported by expert guides, mechanics and a dedicated on-road crew.

Noser added that this tour is the best boost for body and mind - the perfect fusion of sport, travel and friendship. Noser, a serial entrepreneur, business advocate and former member of the Swiss Parliament, says cycling in South Africa's summer almost feels like riding in Switzerland's, just a bit warmer.
The adventure will conclude with a farewell lunch at the Ernie Els Wine Estate in Stellenbosch next week, marking the end of an unforgettable ride and the beginning of lasting memories on Route 62.
