GEORGE NEWS - On a district council, 40% of the councillors are directly elected by the voters through the ballot papers, and a component of 60% are seconded by the councils of the B-municipalities.
The Garden Route District Municipality's (GRDM) full council consists of 35 councillors, with 14 directly elected (through the ballot) and 21 seconded by the different municipalities.
Of the 14 councillors directly elected, the composition are as follows: DA 7 (Memory Booysen, Jacobus Meiring, Petru Terblanche, Coenraad Swart, Georlene Wolmarans, Jobieth Hoogbaard, Koos Malooi); ANC 3 (Stephen de Vries, Nomvuyiseko Gungubele, Ntabiseng Lichaba); FF Plus 1 (Danie Acker); Good 1 (Clive Scheepers); Icosa 1 (Kaynal Adams); PBI 1 (Mercia Draghoender). These names have been proclaimed and were published in the Government Gazette on 9 November.
In reference to the 21 councillors that are seconded by the B-municipalities, the distribution of the seats to the political parties can only be revealed once all the B-municipalities have had their first council meeting.
At this stage George, Knysna, Bitou and Oudtshoorn haven't had meetings, whereas the composition of the seconded councillors in Mossel Bay, Hessequa and Kannaland have been established.
In the Southern Cape the distribution of representation from the different municipalities are as follows: George 6; Mossel Bay 4 (DA 3: Rosina Ruiters, Marulyn Kannemeyer, Anco Barker, and ANC 1: Zwandile Mkhonto); Knysna 3; Oudtshoorn 3; Bitou 2; Hessequa 2 (DA 1: Betsie van Noordwyk and ANC 1: Christopher Taute); Kannaland 1 (Icosa: Hyrin Ruiters).
The first GRDM council meeting has to take place before the end of November.
