NATIONAL NEWS - A 27-year-old man was arrested for human trafficking in Bakerton on Tuesday.
The Ekurhuleni East Cluster Crime Intelligence Unit received information of human trafficking at about 1.30pm.
The unit quickly organised a sector vehicle. On their arrival on the scene they found a 27-year-old Ethiopian man trying to run away, but he was apprehended by the police.
“On further investigation the police noticed a room was locked.
“They broke open the door and found 13 illegal immigrants locked inside.
“They had allegedly each paid the suspect 100 000 birr (Ethiopian currency which is about R55 000) to be brought into South Africa illegally.
“A case docket of human trafficking has been opened for further investigation,” says Springs Police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora.
Ramphora says the immigrants, who were all men between the ages of 13 and 27, arrived in South Africa last Thursday and were promised jobs.
The police suspect some sort of scam as it appears the suspect was not working alone.
The immigrants were quickly taken for counselling after they were found.
They are being detained as illegal immigrants.
