That was the message from former public protector Thuli Madonsela to graduates at the University of Witwatersrand last night.
Wits awarded Madonsela an honorary doctorate in law in recognition of her steadfastness and integrity in seeking out corruption and upholding South Africa’s constitutional democracy.
It is her fifth honorary doctorate from a South African university.
Madonsela told qualification recipients that good leadership was needed to shape the country.
“Our graduation takes place in the midst of challenging times... To be a leader, you have to inspire hope and make people believe there is a better way than the status quo,” she said.
