NATIONAL NEWS - A 17-year-old suspect, arrested in connection with the murder and rape of a 79-year-old woman on a farm just outside Van Wyksdorp, is set to appear in the Ladismith Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, 16 July.
Valerie Enzer, who had lived alone on the farm for the past 18 years, was found dead on her porch by a farmworker on Monday morning.
According to Sgt Chris Spies, spokesperson for the Southern Cape Police, Ladismith Police opened a murder case after Enzer's body was discovered at about 09:00 at her home, about an hour’s drive from Ladismith.
“The investigation led to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy. He remains in police custody. The circumstances surrounding her death form part of an ongoing police investigation. A post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death will be conducted later,” Spies said.
It is alleged that Enzer was brutally murdered and possibly raped.
A resident of Van Wyksdorp, who wishes to remain anonymous, said Enzer was a good person. She said the town has been left in shock and horror following the murder. “She was a lovely woman with a truly kind heart. She didn’t deserve to die like this.”
According to the resident, the 17-year-old suspect has a criminal record and is known in the community for causing trouble. “He simply has no regard for others.”
