NATIONAL NEWS - Police have launched a manhunt for a gang of about 30 armed robbers after five ATMs were bombed at a shopping mall in Hammanskraal, Tshwane.
According to an article published by Pretoria Rekord, the ATMs at a north of Pretoria mall were reportedly bombed at around 01:30 this morning, and a private security officer was shot and injured during the perpetrators’ escape.
“It is reported that the security guard was conducting patrols outside the mall when he was accosted by the [robbers], who were driving in a bakkie. The suspects robbed him of his firearm and proceeded inside the shopping mall, where they robbed the second security officer of his cellphone,” says provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.
“It is further alleged that the suspects then bombed five ATMs and broke into one of the shops where they bombed the drop safe,” he adds.
As the robbers were leaving the mall, they met police and private security officers and started firing shots.
“A shoot-out ensued between the police, private security officers and the suspects. One of the security officers was shot and wounded,” says Masondo.
He adds that the injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment.
“No arrests were made. Police are still on the look-out for the suspects.”
Police can’t yet confirm how much money was taken from the ATMs and the shop.
