NATIONAL NEWS - With the final matric exams just days away, more than 71 000 full-time Grade 12 learners across the Western Cape are preparing for the last major hurdle of their school careers.
The 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams start on Tuesday 13 October with the Computer Applications Technology practical examination and conclude on 25 November.
Altogether, 71 302 full-time candidates will write, as well as 13 834 part-time and repeat candidates.
The exam period stretches over seven weeks, with 28 examination days. No papers will be written from 2 to 5 November due to the local government elections, or on 9 November due to Diwali.
Western Cape education minister Jaco Londt has urged matrics to make the most of the final days before exams and to remain focused.
"We appeal to matriculants to use their time wisely and not let anything disrupt their studying," he said. Teachers, tutors and education officials have also been working with Grade 12 learners during the spring break to help them prepare.
Online support
The WCED has made additional online support available, including past examination papers and memoranda, video tutorials, study guides, subject-specific academic support and study tips.
Learners who are struggling emotionally are also encouraged to seek help.
Schools can contact the toll-free Safe Schools Hotline on 0800 45 46 47, which can connect learners with assistance from government departments and NGOs.
Londt encouraged the Class of 2026 to stay disciplined while also taking constructive breaks during their final preparations. "Do not let anything deter you from the path you have been diligently walking on for 12 years." - Compiled by Michelle Pienaar
