NATIONAL NEWS - Airlink has withdrawn its application for a third flyover, planned for this weekend, as the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) examines last weekend’s flight over Cape Town’s DHL Stadium.
The aircraft display, which took place on 29 August ahead of the Springboks’ match against the All Blacks, attracted global attention.
Thousands condemned the flyover while many South Africans defended the airline’s actions.
SACAA said it began compliance checks following the operation and has since engaged with Airlink, obtained flight data recordings and requested additional information from the airline.
Previous operations and approval
Airlink had submitted three applications for flypasts linked to the rugby matches. The first was conducted in Johannesburg on 22 August, while the Cape Town flypast was the second.
According to SACAA, the Cape Town operation was approved after the required documentation, simulator practice and safety briefing were completed.
The regulator is now analysing the available flight data and other information.
“A full report with recommendations will be shared with the operator once the assessment has been completed,” SACAA said.
Third flight cancelled
SACAA confirmed that Airlink notified it yesterday (September 1) that it had withdrawn its application for the third flypast, which was planned for this weekend.
The regulator has not indicated whether any safety or regulatory breaches occurred during Saturday’s flyover.
SACAA said aviation safety and security compliance remained its priority and that the assessment would determine whether any safety concerns arising from the operation require further review.
