The latest model to make use of the same MQB A0-platform as the new Polo, the Virtus, based on the single image shared on Instagram, incorporates the same front end as its hatchback siblings, but with a more sleeker appearance at the rear with lights seemingly taken from the Audi A4.
According to reports, the newcomer's arrival in January next year could potentially result in a pick-up model to rival the top-selling Fiat Toro, although this has yet to be confirmed.
In terms of engines, the Virtus will most likely mirror those of the Polo in receiving a normally aspirated 1.6 developing 87 kW and 162 Nm of torque, and a 1.0-litre TSI making 95 kW and 200 Nm. A five-speed manual gearbox is likely to be standard on the former and a six-speed automatic on the latter.
If it does become a reality for South Africa, expect it to employ the same range of petrol engines as the European spec Polo, as well as at least one version of the 1.6 TDI.
