The new XC90 will make use of the brand’s own Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology. “This is one of the most important days in our history. We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. This day marks a new era for our company. The all-new Volvo XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group.
This model will also be the first to feature a new, more prominent badge which has the arrow aligned with the diagonal slash across the grille along with the T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” DRL lights.
The interior has a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system. This system is virtually button-free and represents an entirely new in which drivers can control their vehicle.
The all-new Volvo XC90 interior combines materials such as soft leather and wood with handcrafted details, including a gear lever made of crystal glass and diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control. Craftsmanship has been in sharp focus during its entire development.
The seven-seater features new, innovatively designed seats that also free up interior space for passengers, both in the second and third-seat rows. The third row offers class-leading comfort for two passengers up to 170cm tall.
Volvo Cars has also joined forces with the renowned British audio equipment company Bowers & Wilkins to provide a high quality sound system in the new SUV.
The new model will be available with a range of two-litre, four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains. Then, to top off the range, there’ll be a T8 Twin Engine, which will be available locally and combines a two-litre, four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, good for 295kW with CO2 emissions of around 60g/km.
Safety is always top of Volvo’s list of priorities and the XC90 will have new technologies that will help in a scenario where the vehicle veers off the road and the car tightens the safety belts to help prevent spine injuries. It also features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car.
City Safety now encompasses automatic braking in front of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians - both day and night.
There are two major exterior styling themes available, namely the Urban Luxury package, which combines a colour co-ordinated body kit with polished stainless steel details, such as front deco frames, front and rear skid plates and side scuff plates. The Rugged Luxury kit gets matte black exterior trim, stainless steel skid plates, running boards with illumination and integrated exhaust pipes.
The Volvo XC90 AWD D5 First Edition will be priced at R1 050 000 when it arrives in 2015. The International press have an opportunity to drive the car in March next year, meaning, the expected launch may take place in the second half of 2015 – possibly around August. Full range details and pricing will be available closer to the local launch, but expected pricing is said to start just under R800 000.
