The car has been shown overseas in two variants, namely the conventional five-door hatchback and a model featuring a retractable fabric folding roof. It is 3 470mm long and 1 620mm wide, with a turning circle of 9.6 metres, making it a very compact vehicle for city driving.
It incorporates more of the new Peugeot design language,with a 208-esque front grille and lights along with a low intake grille. All models will receive the ‘technical’ design element, which combines the use of black and chrome to give the car a dynamiclook. The rear lights are intended to create a wrap-around effect along with the signature three-claw motif.
The interior gets infotainment niceties displayed through a seven-inch touch screen that has the MirrorLink and AppInCar functionalities. Keyless go and automatic air conditioning are standard, as is the speed-limiter function behind the steering wheel, heated electric mirrors and fuel-cap opener located on the dashboard. The fabric top model’s roof is 800mm wide and 760mm long and has a deflector to reduce wind turbulence in the cabin.
The boot provides 196 litres of space (or 180 litres with a spare tyre specified). Safety features include six airbags as standard - two driver and passenger items, two curtain units and two lateral airbags. There will be two engines available: a 51kW 1.0-litre as well as a 61kW 1.2-litre unit. The modest figures may not seem like much, but with a kerb weight of just 840kg and a pseudo-McPherson front axle and deformable rear beam suspension should make it a sprightly little car.
The 108 will have its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday 4 March.Local availability and official specifications for South Africa will be made available closer to the local introduction.
