GEORGE NEWS - Zakiyyah de Klerk has taken the helm of the Rotary Club of George for the 2026/27 Rotary year, becoming the youngest female president in the club's history.

Originally from the Eastern Cape, De Klerk has lived in George since 2011 and says her involvement with Rotary gave her a sense of purpose, belonging and an opportunity to serve the community.

In line with her theme for the year, 'Heart, Service and Partnerships', her priorities include strengthening relationships with local businesses, community organisations and residents.

With a professional background in business and business development, De Klerk says she hopes to use her experience in building relationships to reach her goal.

De Klerk also serves as vice president of Rosemoor Home for the Aged and works for the Carpe Diem Trust, which focuses on creating opportunities for people with disabilities.

She says her approach to leadership will be collaborative, and she encourages Rotarians to contribute ideas and take ownership of projects.

"I don't believe leadership is about directing people from the top," she says. "It's about growing together."

She also wants to attract new members and support service projects that provide lasting benefits to George.

The Rotary Club of George has a long history of supporting initiatives involving education, youth development, healthcare, care for the elderly, environmental projects, humanitarian assistance and community development. For De Klerk, collaboration will be key to continuing that work. "Rotary belongs to the community it serves," she says.
