GEORGE NEWS - A well-known George motorcyclist, Basie Gerber (78), died on Monday 4 May during a crash at a traffic circle on the corner of York and Steenbras streets, near the new Mediclinic George.
According to information from his family, Gerber, fondly known as 'Oom Basie', was riding his three-wheeled motorcycle (trike) when it collided with a tree.
It is believed he may have suffered a blackout due to low blood pressure before the incident.
Gerber’s Jack Russell, Jasper, who was always by his side, was with him at the time of the crash.
The dog was taken by members of the public to the Garden Route SPCA, where he was cared for until being collected by Gerber’s son, Chris. Jasper will now stay with Chris and his wife, Benita, in Calitzdorp.
He was regarded as an experienced motorcyclist with extensive knowledge of motorcycles and riding techniques. Over the years, he mentored and assisted several younger riders.
Although he was not affiliated with a formal club, Gerber was a familiar figure among local motorcycling groups and regularly rode with fellow enthusiasts.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalised and will be announced at a later stage.
He is survived by his brother, two sisters, his son, daughter and daughter-in-law.
