GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEOS - After about 40 informal dwellings were destroyed in a fierce blaze that broke out in Zone 8, Edameni in Thembalethu on Friday 6 June, a swift community response and relief efforts were quickly mobilised.
Ward 12 Councillor Eric Mdaka again visited the site in the aftermath, reflecting on the hardship faced by residents who lost everything on Saturday 14 June.
“It is heartbreaking to see so many families displaced. But we have also witnessed great humanity,” he said.
Mdaka extended heartfelt thanks to the George branch of the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters club for stepping in to support the victims. Led by branch chairperson Costar Dlovu and member Daniel Sithole, the group collected and donated essential supplies, including food, blankets and clothing.
Standing beside the Councillor at the scene, Dlovu emphasised the group’s commitment to community upliftment. “We are not just football supporters. We are part of this community, and it’s important that we live the spirit of Ubuntu – humanity towards others, especially in times of crisis,” he said.
No injuries or fatalities were reported, according to emergency services, but the fire has had a devastating impact on those affected.
Relief efforts continue, with local churches and organisations such as the George Alert Team and Love George also playing key roles in the distribution of aid.
Councillor Mdaka concluded by saying, “The Mamelodi Sundowns supporters demonstrated true compassion. Their contribution is deeply appreciated.”
