GEORGE NEWS - Andrew Lusk, an ultra-endurance athlete from Ballito, is out on a cause to call on the public to support the feeding of children throughout South Africa.
He passed through George on Monday on a 10-day run of more than 600km from Plettenberg Bay to Cape Town aimed at raising funds in collaboration with Rise Against Hunger. He crossed the Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn, from where he was to run along Route 62 and on to Ashton, Worcester and Paarl.
Lusk started his journey, The Road to Hope, in Plettenberg Bay on Saturday, and he aims to reach Asics at Century City in Cape Town by next Tuesday, 12 August. His aim is to collect R100 000, which will be enough to provide food for 400 children for a year.
This is his ninth ultra-distance run for a good cause over the past few years. He has completed eight solo charity runs across South Africa, including Durban to Cape Town (via the Karoo and around Lesotho), Durban to Johannesburg (four times), Ficksburg to Cape Town, and Johannesburg to Durban (twice). His longest run was 58 days.
His wife, Delia, who is accompanying him, said Andrew has a long-standing commitment to using his legs, and his heart, to bring awareness to urgent social issues.
Andrew said it was more than a run for him. “I’m starting to call them SUJs - ‘sacred ultra-journeys’. This is not about me, but about helping as many kids as possible. It’s about connecting with the people of South Africa and seeing what we can do together to make a difference.”
His only support are his wife and their nine-month-old daughter, Hunter, her carer, Slindile Mdluli, and Daniel Louw of Titan Security who handles logistics and assists with food and supplies on the road.
Andrew’s journeys are all self-funded and community-driven, and done for various charitable causes.
Delia says they are deeply grateful for the kindness and support from local businesses along the route. “They have shown incredible generosity by opening their doors and offering safe, warm places to rest.”
She also thanked those who have made donations. “Your contributions are fuelling this mission, one step at a time, and by donating, you become part of the mission to create lasting change.”
