Group Editors Live correspondent Jeff Ayliffe happened to be in the right place at the right time earlier this morning, Saturday 12 April, when he rescued a stingray that had been caught by a fisherman in Wilderness.
The fisherman made a sincere effort to return the ray to the ocean, but he was understandably extremely cautious — and rightly so.
As is widely known, the most dangerous part of a stingray is its tail, particularly the barbed spines located on its upper side. Stingrays can also accurately aim their tails. The spines are venomous and capable of inflicting painful and potentially serious injuries if a person is stung.
Jeff, who has experience working with these animals, stepped in and safely returned the stingray to the water.
