GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Construction of the Garden Route District Municipality’s (GRDM) regional waste management facility is progressing, with the first waste cell 99% complete and the leachate and contaminated-water dams 82% complete.
According to the municipality’s latest progress update, only a small section of the stone drainage layer remains to be installed in Cell 1A.
Both dams have been fully lined with multiple layers of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes, a drainage layer for leak detection and protective geotextile. The next phase involves installing 150mm geocells filled with concrete, which is expected to be completed by the end of October.
Other infrastructure, including roads, buildings and stormwater systems, is also nearing completion. The remaining work largely involves finishing touches such as road markings and stone pitching.
However, the facility cannot begin accepting waste until the required approvals, including a positive Record of Decision, have been obtained from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).
The municipality is currently completing the necessary liner tests and compiling supporting documentation to expedite the approval process and allow operations to begin as soon as possible.
