GEORGE NEWS - In a united front against gender-based violence (GBV), Legally You, the Pacaltsdorp SAPS and the Pacaltsdorp CPF hosted their first GBV response workshop at Eagles Nest Ministries on Saturday 3 May.
The workshop brought together community leaders, stakeholders and representatives of the Conville CPF, Thembalethu CPF, Hoogekraal Neighbourhood Watch, Garden Route District Youth Desk and Sanca.
Adv Marilyn Scheepers Olifant, founder of Legally You, and Angelique Vezasie of the Alcohol Harms Alleviation and Rehabilitation Association, in her capacity as GBV councillor, delivered detailed presentations covering the legal framework impacting GBV, focusing on critical pieces of legislation.
She emphasised the right to safety through protection orders under the Domestic Violence Amendment Act, helping attendees understand how to assist victims in applying for these legal protections.
The session concluded with a presentation by members of the Pacaltsdorp SAPS, focusing on the legislative framework around arrests and protection orders.
They also provided guidelines to neighbourhood watches about citizens’ arrests.
Their presentation detailed some of their stumbling blocks with domestic violence complaints, and contained recent case law studies and best practices.
