GEORGE NEWS - A 45-year-old man, Nzaweka Tawule, was sentenced to one year direct imprisonment in terms of the contravention of the National Heritage Resources Act by the George Regional Court, Thursday 30 September.
"In December 2020, it was discovered that some of the steam locomotives on display at the Outeniqua Transport Museum were stolen and others damaged. An investigation was conducted which led to the arrest of Tawule in May 2021," said Hawks spokesperson, Zinzi Hani.
Thick-walled copper pipes were recovered in his possession which linked him to the theft.
In August 2021, he was convicted for theft and malicious damage to property.
Tawule was sentenced to two 12-month prison terms which will run concurrently. He was also handed down a further suspended sentence of two years.
