GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality is spearheading the multi-million-rand upgrade of the Rosemoor Stadium, a key multi-code sports facility located in the heart of the community, and will turn it into a world-class venue.
The aim is to host various athletic events and to serve as a central hub for local sports clubs and schools.
The cost of the upgrade amounts to R40 590 000. Ruwacon Pty Ltd is the contractor who was awarded the tender in March this year.
Construction on the site commenced in May and the planned completion of specifically the tartan track is January 2025.
According to Granville Campher, manager of Sport Development at George Municipality, the decision to upgrade Rosemoor Stadium was driven by the need to provide a standard athletic facility for the community.
“Historically, athletic meetings at the stadium were conducted on a gravel track that did not conform to official athletics norms and standards. Consequently, the performances and achievements of athletes were not recognised officially,” Campher said.
Campher said the need for an upgraded facility was identified through extensive engagement with various stakeholders and incorporated into the integrated development plan (IDP) cycles since the 2012/2013 financial year.
The project materialised following the acquisition of additional land and the securing of sufficient funding. Due to the highly specialised nature of the construction, all measures are being taken to ensure the new track meets the World Athletics standards for a Class 2 facility.
Campher said the upgraded Rosemoor Stadium will serve as a home base for a variety of sports clubs and schools in the immediate area. The new tartan athletics track will not only meet international standards but also ensure that the times and achievements of athletes are officially recognised.
This upgrade is expected to enhance the overall sports infrastructure in the region, fostering greater participation and development in athletics.
Upon completion, the upgraded Rosemoor Stadium will be equipped with a state-of-the-art athletics track and facilities, including an area inside the track that is large enough to accommodate all throwing events and also a standard football (soccer) pitch.
This will enable the stadium to host regional, national, and potentially, international events, boosting the local economy and promoting sports tourism. Apart from being a vital infrastructure development; it is a commitment to nurturing athletic talent and a healthier, more active community.
