GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - During the National Sea Rescue Institute 43rd Annual General Meeting, held at the Waterfront in Cape Town on Thursday, 26 August, the Mossel Bay Station received the Best Station Award NSRI Station 15 Mossel Bay and was awarded the Pat O'Sullivan Trophy for the following reasons:
The old building was made up of a series of additions which had been constructed at various times over a number of years but was cramped and dingy.
With Mossel Bay NSRI Station earmarked to receive a larger boat next year to cope with the increase of fishing boats in the area it was decided to rebuild the existing building while keeping certain sections which were revamped. The design of the new building was carried out by NSRI Regional Director and local architect, Ian Hamilton at no cost to the
NSRI. The construction of the building was carried out by NSRI crew members involved in the building industry on a cost only basis.
Crew members approached various building supply companies in the Mossel Bay area and acquired materials such as bricks and mortar as donations to NSRI and where donations weren't forthcoming they managed to squeeze excellent discounts from the local suppliers.
All in all the members of Station 15 Mossel Bay did a sterling job to obtain a new and very operationally functional building at a price which was way under the original budget and are deserving recipients of the award.
