GEORGE NEWS - Spend your 67 minutes for Mandela at Garden Route SPCA on Wednesday 18 July helping to plant spekboom around the large animal paddocks.
Spekboom hedges will act as a natural, resilient firebreak around the enclosures and are eco-friendly and easy to propagate.
The leaves have the added benefit of being highly nourishing and delicious for animals and humans alike. Jobs for Carbon and the Landmark Foundation, which are part of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve initiative, recently donated a total of 450 spekboom, but more cuttings or whole plants are needed.
If you have a bush at home, please break off a few branches and bring them along as they grow very easily into full shrubs. Spades and trowels will be made available at the SPCA and the gates are open from 09:00 to 16:00.
If you can't make it on Mandela Day, please consider helping the SPCA in a different way through sponsoring a kennel at only R80 a month or giving a once-off donation to their "Adopt-a-spay" campaign to save unwanted puppies or kittens from being born.
Adding a bequest in your will would also be very welcome for future projects.
