Update
GEORGE NEWS - Two wildfires, sparked by lightning strikes last night, 18 May, are raging in the Outeniqua mountain range.
The fires are located in the Jonkersberge, west of Highlands Lodge, and Spitskop, north of Goudveld.
Both fires are being attended to by the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM), CapeNature, Working on Fire (Kishugu), George Municipality, SANParks, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association.
With the Jonkersberg area being inaccessible to ground crews, the DFFE has dispatched a helicopter and spotter plane to try and extinguish the fires before they spread any further. SANParks has also activated an aerial reconnaissance flight to cover the broader Outeniqua mountain range.
It is now critical to prevent the fire from spreading to the Highlands Lodge with its log cabins surrounded by pine trees.
The public is urged to immediately report any wildfires to the GRDM’s emergency call centre on 44 805 5071 or via WhatsApp, on 081 709 5193.
