GEORGE NEWS - The critical role that bees play in the food chain in addition to producing valuable honey, propolis and wax will be discussed at a University of the Third Age (U3A) meeting at Emmaüs on Friday, 15 June. Managing director of Propollen (Pty) Ltd., Kobus Vos, will deliver a lecture entitled "Bees, Hives and Honey".
Vos will explain and demonstrate the basics of sound hive management using a beehive, complete with frames and honeycombs, and will also have a hive to show the bees at work (but safely behind glass). To cap it all, Kobus will have jars of fresh honey for sale.
Beekeeping has been Vos’s major hobby since childhood. He spent seven months working with bees in the USA before returning to South Africa and starting his commercial beekeeping business, which currently operates with approximately 2 000 hives.
Everyone is welcome to come along to Emmaüs and learn about the honey you put on your toast. The meeting will start at 10:30.
Members are asked to pay R5 and visitors R10 to cover the costs of the meeting. To become a member or for enquiries phone, phone Mike Holland on 044 620 2589 or Ciska Tempest on 044 871 4828.
