GEORGE NEWS - Several complaints about discrimination and racism experienced in George will be investigated, according to Western Cape Human Rights Commissioner Chris Nissen.
Nissen and the chairman of the Human Rights Commission (HRC), Prof Bongani Majola, were in George on Monday night as part of a road show to celebrate Mandela Day. "We wanted to reach out to the community and create awareness of the commission and its services," said Nissen afterwards.
They met with church and community leaders at the premises of Eagle's Nest Ministries in Pacaltsdorp.
Nissen said the leaders requested a follow-up meeting with the commission to specifically discuss ongoing racism in the community. "We will also investigate specific racism complaints, but this can only be done once complaints have officially been laid."
Complaints can be reported to the Western Cape HRC in Cape Town on 021 426 2277, or send a fax to 021 426 2875. On Tuesday, Nissen and Majola travelled to Beaufort West where they were part of an outreach in the town as well as at a road block together with the Department of Community Safety.
