In a celebration that blended legacy, justice and music, the Pacaltsdorp SAPS recently hosted its annual Elderly Day in partnership with Legally You.
Held under the theme 'Youth Day of Yesterdays', the event honoured the wisdom and contributions of the elderly while raising awareness about gender-based violence and femicide, particularly as it affects senior citizens.
Eden FM presenters Pat and Jonny guided the programme, and a highlight was a powerful musical tribute by local singer John Haas, who moved the crowd with songs dedicated to those elders who have suffered in silence. "Music is a memory keeper," he said.
"Today, I sing not only to celebrate our elders, but to remind us of our duty to protect them."
The event also tackled serious issues, including elder neglect, emotional harm, financial exploitation and abuse. Speakers of Legally You offered practical legal advice under the Older Persons Act, empowering elders and families with knowledge about their rights and how to seek help.
Sergeant Sergio Bowkers emphasised the need to bridge generations with understanding and shared values. "Our youth need the moral guidance of our elders to help build socially responsible communities," he said.
Pacaltsdorp Station's commander, Captain Malcolm Richards, reaffirmed the commitment to protect and empower older persons, noting that community collaboration is vital in preventing abuse, while Adv Marilyn Scheepers-Olifant of Legally You summed it up:
"This is more than a celebration. It's a declaration - we will not tolerate the abuse of our elders. Their voices matter. Their lives matter."
