GEORGE NEWS - Two municipalities in the region recently received much-needed help on the water front from George Municipality. Both Hessequa and Knysna Municipality have been experiencing water-related issues.
George Fire Brigade sent a 35 000-litre stainless steel water tanker to Heidelberg last week after one of its reservoirs ran dry. Water was moved from Riversdale to Heidelberg by fire officials Johan Troskie and Wilton Oktober, who worked through the night to finish filling the reservoir.
The tanker is fitted with a pump that can extract water from sources and can deliver 2 200 litres per minute at 10bar.
On the road, the 22-wheeler vehicle (13m tanker pulled by a five-metre truck) is an impressive sight and requires an advanced EC-driver's licence for articulated vehicles.
Over the weekend the fire tanker, again managed by fire officials Johan Troskie and Wilton Oktober, provided assistance in Knysna during a cleaning operation at the Khayalethu Dam. Two teams from George's Civil Engineering Department were sent with two water trucks to assist with the delivering of water to communities in Knysna during the cleaning process.
Regrettably all of the George vehicles, including the fire tanker, had to withdraw at some point, following threats of violence from the Knysna local communities. George Municipality thanks all the officials for always going the extra mile when called upon.
