GEORGE NEWS - The Western Cape Provincial Government (WCG) hosted an award ceremony at Lentegeur Hospital in Cape Town on Monday 19 May, recognising excellence in health and wellness.
The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) Municipal Health Unit earned a Gold Certificate for its “technological advancement of environmental health and outstanding performance” in meeting Municipal Health Norms and Standards.
The Central Karoo District took third place, with the City of Cape Town in second.
GRDM Mayor Andrew Stroebel praised the Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) for their dedication and innovation. Cllr Jobieth Hoogbaard, MMC for Community Services, highlighted the unit’s role in ensuring resident safety through food safety and water quality initiatives.
Municipal Manager Monde Stratu commended the team for setting a provincial service delivery benchmark. Nthabeleng Raisa-Mlandu, Executive Manager for Community Services, noted a 96.7% compliance rate in the Western Cape Government’s 2023/2024 audit.
Johan Compion, Senior Manager of Municipal Health since 2006, accepted the award on behalf of the team.
The WCG’s annual audit assessed key performance indicators, including water quality, food control, waste management, vector control, and health surveillance.
Municipal Health Services, as defined by the National Health Act of 2003, aim to promote community health and a safe environment.
