GEORGE NEWS - Almost two years after two prisoners had escaped from the George Prison, one of them appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court this morning, 15 July.
Trevor Moliwa (39), a South African national, and Calisto Chaderek (34), a Zimbabwean citizen, made headlines when they escaped from George Prison at about 04:00 on Wednesday 23 August 2023.
According to the information available at the time, the pair had allegedly used a hacksaw to cut through the bars of a bathroom window in the holding cells, before making their way out through a kitchen area and breaching the electrified perimeter fence.
At the time of the escape, Moliwa was in custody on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and possession of stolen items. The police also confirmed he was being investigated in connection with several other serious offences, including armed house robbery.
Chaderek was awaiting trial on charges of housebreaking and theft.
Media enquiries were sent to both the police and the Department of Correctional Services. In a statement, the Southern Cape police’s spokesperson, Sergeant Chris Spies, confirmed Moliwa’s rearrest. “Trevor Moliwa made his second court appearance in court on Tuesday on a charge of escape from lawful custody. The accused was remanded in custody and the matter postponed to 7 August. A search for the other fugitive, Calisto Chaderek, is still under way,” said Spies.
The police urged the public to come forward with any information that could lead to Chaderek’s arrest. Contact the George Detectives Unit on 044 803 4732 or 082 469 7864. Alternatively, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the My SAPS app, anonymously. All information will be treated confidentially.
George Herald is awaiting response from the Department of Correctional Services.
