GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu, who passed away on 21 January due to Covid-19 complications, was his role model in leadership style. This is how Langa Langa, ANC member of the George Municipal Council and also the district secretary of the SACP, describes Mthembu.
Langa met Mthembu on a few occasions when he visited ANC branches as part of his duties as a member of the ANC national working committee.
During these visits Mthembu conveyed the decisions of the ANC's NEC.
It was during his visits to George that Langa got to know him. "He was very friendly and straightforward," says Langa. "He was also upfront, very respectful and down to earth. His death is a great loss to the nation and the organisation.
"He was one of the few remaining credible leaders in the movement. That is the leadership that we need now more than ever in the movement and the country. He was strongly against corruption and wrongdoing."

Langa says Mthembu's style of upfront leadership is needed now. "If you did something wrong, he would come and tell you in a professional way without being rude."
According to Langa, Mthembu was popular in the ANC and he personally will miss him. "I can live with what he stood for."
Mthembu was buried on Sunday in his hometown of eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, during a state funeral. Among the people attending were president Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President David Mabuza.
