GEORGE NEWS - The cause of a fire that destroyed a kiln at George Sawmill at approximately 14:30 on Monday 17 June, is still unknown.
"The George fire brigade received the call at 14:46. On arrival they found one kiln well alight, as well as stacks of wood and also severe damage to a control room structure. The kiln and the wood was completely destroyed," said municipal spokesperson Chantel Edwards-Klose.
The fire was extinguished at approximately 17:00 after which follow up inspections were done every three hours for any flare ups.
No injuries were reported.
According to Tashne Singh, MTO communications specialist, an investigation is currently underway to ascertain the cause of the fire and assessments are being undertaken to determine extent of damage.
"While production is temporarily impacted, teams are working to restore operations. The MTO Group would like to thank the fire brigade and MTO staff for their assistance," she said.
