GEORGE NEWS - The Outeniqua Branch of the Dendrological Society of South Africa is inviting nature lovers to the Grootdraai picnic site in the Gouna Forest on Sunday 13 September for a closer look at one of the area’s fascinating forest environments.
The outing, which starts at 10:00, follows an introduction to the forest area by Georg von dem Bussche at the branch’s November meeting last year.
While participants enjoyed the walk, many felt there hadn’t been enough time to fully appreciate the forest and its remarkable diversity. The upcoming meeting has therefore been planned as an opportunity to revisit the area and explore it more thoroughly.
One of the highlights will be the opportunity to view the numerous juvenile Terblanz trees. The walk will also showcase a variety of indigenous forest trees, including stinkwoods, assegaais, hardpears and black ironwoods.
The participants will also have the chance to observe the effects of the recent storm events, which have resulted in numerous treefalls throughout the forest. These fallen trees provide an opportunity to consider the natural processes that follow such disturbances and the succession that will take place as the forest regenerates. For nature enthusiasts, it is a chance to see the forest not simply as a collection of mature trees, but as a constantly changing and renewing ecosystem.
