GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality drive-through donation centre located at the George Civic Centre has been closed to the public.
The drive-through centre was temporarily set up for good-hearted members of the public, organisations and businesses of George to safely drop off items for the needy.
The Samaritans provided a non-stop supply of perishable and non-perishable items for distribution by the George Municipality during a time of intense need due to lockdown.
Items donated were responsibly distributed to the 137 home-based soup kitchens in vulnerable communities across the municipal area and to a kitchen for the temporary homeless shelter at Rosemoor Stadium. These kitchens were serving two meals a day to up to 20 000 persons at the height of lockdown.
Municipal soup kitchens have now gone back to feeding the vulnerable in their communities three times a week and the temporary homeless shelter has also been closed.
Municipal Manager Trevor Botha thanks the Disaster Centre for manning the drive-through centre for the past few months and reiterated his gratefulness to the people of George who opened their hearts to vulnerable communities.
Donations can now be dropped at the Community Development Building in Varing Avenue from Monday to Friday between 09:00 – 12:00 at the door leading to the reception. The official responsible will be Agnes Mntyedwa and members of the public can contact her on 044 802 2000 to make arrangements should they not want to leave their motor vehicle.
Due to Covid-19 related safety protocols, no persons will be allowed to access the Varing Avenue building. Please note, for accountability and logistics, the official must record a phone number to log on the donation register – a name and phone number is preferable, but the municipality respect residents’ privacy.
People wanting to donate using online grocery delivery services, can make up an online basket and enter the delivery address as George Community Services Building, Varing Avenue, George.
Items that continue to make a big difference include mielie meal, flour, yeast, milk, sugar, salt, coffee, tea, samp, beans, macaroni, soup powder, stock and fresh or frozen vegetables and meat. Cleaning products such as dishwashing liquid, sponges, dishcloths, bleach, all-purpose cleaner and handwash laundry soap and hygiene products such as soap and hand cream, as well as clothing items, will be welcome.
