GEORGE NEWS - October began on a joyful note at Groenkloof Retirement Village in George, where a special event honoured the remarkable lives of residents aged 90 and older.
On 1 October, International Day for the Elderly, the Groenkloof directors hosted a special luncheon at The Hub House restaurant, welcoming 101 residents and their guests to a celebration of life.
The gathering opened with a message of hope as Michiel Burger shared some words of comfort.
Jan Fourie, representing the Groenkloof Foundation, expressed heartfelt thanks to the directors for hosting such a special occasion.
He paid tribute to the residents whose years and wisdom enrich the Groenkloof community, among them Lien Steyn (102), Val Murray (101), Jackie MacKenzie (101), Reinette Schroeder (100) and Hester Joubert (99).
Highlighting the three pillars defining life at Groenkloof - excellent care, security and socialising - he emphasised how excellent care and an uplifting environment enable residents to live with dignity and joy, contributing to their remarkable ages.

They assured them that the Groenkloof Foundation remains committed to ensuring that no resident feels isolated, and that it supports well-being through social events, medical equipment loans and other meaningful initiatives.
“These occasions allow us to celebrate the life accomplishments of those above 90,” he said. “They also help ease loneliness by encouraging us to step out of our homes, share a good meal, and enjoy one another’s company.”
Even those unable to attend the lunch were remembered; each received a freshly baked brownie, lovingly wrapped, as a reminder that they are never forgotten.
The event concluded with Johan van Zyl, chairperson of the Groenkloof Glen Homeowners’ Association, expressing appreciation to The Hub House’s staff for their warm hospitality, delicious food and the vital role they play in creating a space where residents and the broader community can gather and enjoy one another’s company.
Groenkloof truly is a place where care and community meet, and where every life is celebrated.
