GEORGE NEWS - It was love at first sight when Glenham and Yvonne Bodeker met 73 years ago in Durban. She was 18 and he 19.
A courtship of five years followed before they tied the knot in 1956 at St James Church in Durban. So this coming Sunday, 27 October, the couple will be married for a marathon 68 years.
This is a week of celebration as Yvonne turned 90 on Tuesday 22 October. She received a lovely perfume from Glenham on her birthday, but said on their anniversary, all they wish for is to have their family with them.
A tearful Yvonne said there hangs a shadow over their celebrations as her son, who also lives in Groenkloof with his wife, suffered a stroke a while ago. His wife is caring for him at home. The Bodekers are grateful for being spared for one another for so long.
Their advice for a life-long marriage: "Our love, being honest, and being always together and doing things together," said Yvonne.
They followed their children to George three years ago, moving to Groenkloof Retirement Village from Amanzimtoti. The couple are still active and independent. Yvonne likes to cook and bake, and they love to entertain.
They have a son and daughter, four grand-children and four great-grandchildren who regularly stay in touch.
