GEORGE NEWS - All meetings in August will be at Emmaüs in Memorium Street.
The programme kicks off on Friday 4 August with the first in a series of art appreciation lectures that will be presented by Dr Brendan Cole, titled "Introduction to classical art".
This lecture will discuss classical art and its origins in ancient Greece and Rome. He will discuss the aesthetic principles of classical art, such as idealisation, naturalism and balance, highlighting the enduring influence of classical art on western art. The lecture will start at 10:30.
On Wednesday 16 August in Armchair Travel, Paul Rixom will present an illustrated talk on "Mongolia - a land without fences", a journey that he and his wife took in 2002. This talk will start at 10:30.
On Friday 18 August at 10:30, part 2 of the art appreciation course will deal with "Renaissance art and classicism".
The Digi camera club is back on Monday 21 August with the theme being "The road less travelled". This meeting will start at 14:00.
On Friday 25 August, Johan Viljoen will talk about "The sinking of the USS Indianapolis". This ship served President Roosevelt as ship of state, and Admiral Spruance as the fifth Fleet Flagship during World War II.
She fought gallantly through many campaigns, earning ten battle stars. Her final top-secret mission was to carry parts of the first atomic bomb used in combat to a US airbase in Tinian in the Pacific Ocean. Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
Case Rijsdijk will be back with another discussion on international affairs on Monday 28 August at 14:00.
At the general meeting on Wednesday 30 August, Christina Auerbach will talk on "The power of sound and mindfulness".
