GEORGE NEWS - The police won’t tolerate any posts on social media containing fake news or incendiary comments.
This was the strong message that went out earlier today, 15 July, at a meeting of stakeholders concerning the looting and lawlessness in parts of the country.
Brigadier Phumzile Cetyana, acting cluster commander of the Eden cluster, informed attendees that three suspects were arrested in Thembalethu regarding a post on social media yesterday, Wednesday 14 July.
He said the post was detected after a complaint was lodged regarding a conversation on Facebook that might spark violence. Three people were arrested after the police investigated the matter.
According to Cetyana the matter is still under investigation and a decision whether to prosecute or not will be taken later.
This incident demonstrates that the police takes possible false social posts very seriously.
Cetyana said all police officers in the district are on standby, including those that are on leave and on rest days.
The meeting was initiated by the mayor of the Garden Route District Municipality, Memory Booysen, and held at the municipality offices in George. Stakeholders attending the meeting included representatives of local councils, a taxi association, the business community and the police. So far no looting has been reported in the area.
