GEORGE NEWS - Motorists are warned to avoid Thembalethu due to a stay-away action by taxi operators.
The taxi strike was called by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco).
Santaco said yesterday they decided to suspend all taxi operations in Cape Town and across the province with immediate effect because of the Western Cape government's ill-treatment of the taxi industry.
Thousands of commuters from Thembalethu have been walking to various destinations across George this morning.
Vehicles coming out of Thembalethu with passengers are being stopped by taxi operators who are forcing passengers out.
Tyres are being burnt near Fourways and police also had to fire stun grenades to disperse taxi operators who were attempting to block a fuel truck from entering Thembalethu earlier this by morning.
Feedback regarding the situation is awaited from Uncedo/ Santaco, the police and municipality.
