GEORGE NEWS - Six suspects were arrested in possession of drugs in various neighbourhoods in George over the weekend.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, the operation continued throughout the weekend.
On Thursday 26 October, George Visible Policing responded to information of illicit drugs in a vehicle parked in Market Street.
The vehicle was taken to the police station where it was searched and 219 Mandrax tablets were found concealed inside.
A 43-year-old man was arrested in connection with the find and is facing a charge of dealing in drugs.
On Friday, members of the Garden Route Crime Combatting Team (GRCCT) and the George Public Order Police (Pops) reacted on a tip-off that took them to the taxi rank in the CBD. Here they confiscated 11,5 Mandrax tablets and nearly a kilogram of tik.
Another 43-year-old man was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs. Two more suspects, aged 22 and 43, were also arrested at the taxi rank on charges of possession of drugs after small quantities of Mandrax and tik were found in their possession.
On the same day, GRCCT members performed a raid on a house in Melford Notshokovu Street in Lawaaikamp where 300 Mandrax tablets were found. A 36-year-old man was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs.
On Saturday 28 October, patrol members spotted a man selling dagga in Doneraille Street in the CBD.
“They immediately approached him and found dagga in his possession. The suspect (24) was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs and the dagga confiscated,” Spies said.
The suspects remain in custody and are all expected to make their first court appearances later today, Monday 30 October.
