GEORGE NEWS - Well-known Pacaltsdorp businessman and electrician Sam van Wyk passed away at the Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town on Saturday 7 April after a long illness bravely borne.
His wife, Antoinette, described Sam as a modern-day philosopher who listened to young and old, and a dedicated father whose wise words were valued by all.
He was a gentleman and leader who never crossed any boundaries; a hard-working man who always delivered work of exceptional quality and if money was scarce, he would make a plan, as he believed that one's labour is nobler than the money earned.
Self-taught and widely read, his favourite saying was, "Follow knowledge like a sinking star".
Sam could talk on any subject and always had an opinion. His love for the sea allowed him to spend quality time at Gwaiing where he taught his children and their friends the basic skills of life-saving. Helping people was the story of his life.
His son Riaan says the the community of Pacaltsdorp has lost a true friend. "We will miss you Pappa and never forget you."
Born in Blanco in 1945, he completed his schooling in George and started his working life with local electrician Clive van der Poel, where he qualified.
Sam started his own business in 1978 as Pacaltsdorp's first successful electrical contractor, known throughout George for the standard of his workmanship.
Sam is survived by his wife Antoinette, children Riaan, Ophelia, Dianne, Anthea and five grandchildren.
The funeral will take place on Saturday 14 April at 09:00 from the home in Chrysanthemum Street, followed by a service at 10:00 at the Congregational Church in Mission Road, Pacaltsdorp.
A memorial service will be held tonight, Thursday 12 April, at 19:00 at the Congregational Church.
