GARDEN ROUTE NEW S- One man has been arrested in connection with the armed cash in transit (CIT) robbery and murder that took place in Long Street in Knysna's CBD at about 10:55 on Saturday 26 June. A Fidelity security guard was killed during the robbery.

The suspect, a 28-year-old man, was arrested outside Mossel Bay on 28 June after police tracked the suspects' vehicle that was used in the incident.

 "The vehicle used in the incident was identified on CCTV footage recorded by cameras located in the vicinity of the crime scene," said Hawks spokes-person Zinzi Hani. "The vehicle was stopped by police outside Mossel Bay on the morning of 28 June and the driver was arrested." She confirmed that the vehicle was seized by police and is being safeguarded by police. The suspect was charged for robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder, appearing in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on 30 June where the matter was postponed to 8 July for a bail application. During the robbery a group of suspects targeted a Fidelity Security CIT vehicle which was retrieving cash from a supermarket at the shopping centre.

According to information provided by national police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili, there were two security guards collecting the cash. One waited in the vehicle while the other carried out the collection. "Information gathered on scene indicates that the driver was inside the vehicle when his partner returned," Muridili said. "He heard a noise and when he went to investigate noticed two men fleeing with the cash and he found his partner fatally wounded."
